The amazing power of oxytocin

Oxytocin is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus and is released into the bloodstream by the posterior pituitary gland. In addition to its known role in childbirth and lactation, oxytocin is also known as the “cuddle hormone” or the “love hormone,” because it is released when people hug or bond socially. It can also boost libido in men and women, and create longer and more intense orgasms. In men, it can improve erections and ejaculation.

Oxytocin has the potential to enhance interpersonal relationships and individual well-being, with applications in conditions characterized by persistent fear, repetitive behavior, reduced trust, and avoidance of social interactions. This amazing molecule acts both as a hormone and as a brain neurotransmitter. Oxytocin can induce a general sense of well-being, including calm, improved social interactions, increased confidence and trust, and reduced fear and anxiety.

New research is finding other remarkable benefits of boosting oxytocin. It has been found to diminish pain from migraine headaches and fibromyalgia. It can also boost mental clarity and concentration. Oxytocin has been found to stimulate cardiac stem cells to help repair the heart, and bone stem cells to build new bone and prevent or reverse osteoporosis. It has also been found to reduce symptoms of PTSD, improve blood sugar levels, promote weight loss, reverse vaginal atrophy in post-menopausal women, and improve prostate health in middle-aged men. For those dealing with substance abuse, oxytocin can reduce addictive behaviors.

Boosting oxytocin levels is very safe. A systematic review of 38 randomized controlled trials conducted between 1990 and 2010 investigated the central effects and adverse effects associated with intranasal oxytocin. The trials included 1529 subjects (79% male) who received intranasal oxytocin, in dosages from 18 to 40 IU, mainly given in single doses but ranging up to 182 administrations. Side effects were no different between oxytocin and placebo.

Comments from Dr. Thomas: Oxytocin is subject to degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore has traditionally been administered by injection instead of orally. To facilitate more convenient administration, our pharmacy can compound oxytocin by prescription as a sublingual tablet or nasal spray. Please contact us for more information.
