Are walnuts the ultimate brain food?

Researchers at the Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory at the New York State Institute for Basic Research and Developmental Disabilities may have discovered a simple-yet-effective way to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Preliminary findings suggest that eating a handful of raw walnuts each day may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in those afflicted with the disease, as well as prevent the disease from emerging in healthy individuals.

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating and common form of dementia that impacts memory, thinking, coordination, and behavior. Oxidative damage, inflammation, and accumulation of amyloid protein deposits are three hallmarks of Alzheimer’s. Consuming walnuts seems to reduce these hallmarks. More studies on the effect of walnuts on brain health will be forthcoming.
